The fairness of a society is measured in the everyday life of its citizens. Everybody has a right to a good life – i.e., a sufficient income and access to high-quality health care and education. For the Greens, culture is part of the basic services.
High-quality public services benefit everybody. For the weakest and poorest, they are vital. The most vulnerable members of our society are those who are excluded from paid employment - the elderly, children, the sick, the mentally ill, the disabled and the long-term unenployed.
Safeguarding the basic services is not only a matter of justice. It is also economically beneficial. Preventing problems is much cheaper than trying to solve them afterwards. The main responsibility for the basic services should remain with the municipalities. The National Government must provide sufficient funds for the maintenance of the services.
